M. robusta is slightly more cold tolerant and flowers a few weeks earlier (July in UK). Reference; Eagles complete trees and shrubs of New Zealand.
The difference between Metrosideros robusta and Metrosideros excelsa. M excelsa has a slightly larger softer leaf with whitish tomentum underside. Pedicel and receptacle on flower also covered with white tomentum.
