The tree on the right is Magnolia doltsopa alongside Magnolia sargentiana var. robusta. Both in flower at the end of March. This tree I believe is the largest in the country introduced from W. China by Forrest in about 1918 and first flowering in 1933 at Caerhays Castle in Cornwall. Formally known as Michelia doltsopa this is one of the three Michelias mentioned in Beans book. I noticed this tree and the tree at Greenway Garden were both covered in flowers from top to bottom whereas others I've seen in more shaded woodland had only perhaps 10% of the flowers indicating that these like many Magnolias need sun to flower well. |
