Possibly the result of 2 hard winters the Phoenix palm at Fota arboretum is dead. At around a hundred years old and one of the most northerly specimens its a sad loss. One of the gardeners said that the top of this palm just fell off in the wind. Out of frame on the opposite side of the path there is the remains of its partner long since gone. Other palms at Fota include Trachycarpus and Chamaerops.
